Bypass Solutions, Monbulk VIC

NPE was engaged to supply a potable water bypass pumping system, while the existing Monbulk pump station at Silvan Reservoir was receiving a major structural overhaul and new pumps.

In conjunction with AMS and Melbourne Water, a bypass system was designed to be able to confidently take the existing pump station offline for an extended period with confidence that the local community would receive potable drinking water for the duration of the project.

NPE custom made medium head electric centrifugal pumps to suit the duty required to utilise the mains power on site from the decommissioned pump station while works were being undertaken. NPE pump station was positively fed through a 400m long 450mm poly pipeline connected to the Upper Yarra to Silvan pipeline, bypassing the Monbulk Pump Station. This water was then pumped through the water treatment plant up to the McCarthy Road tanks to supply the local area with potable drinking water.

Switching over pumpstations from the Cardinia to the NPE bypass had a narrow window to perform and had to be completed within the same shift. The existing Monbulk pumpstation had to first be disconnected, electrically and operationally to supply the NPE bypass the power and operation through the Melbourne Water network. To add complexity the final discharge point for NPE to connect into the existing pipeline, had to be cut in on the same day as the electrical and instrumentation works.

General pump operation was through the SCADA network as it was integrated with the water treatment plant and tank level. On top of this NPE had our own secondary, independent telemetry to alert of any faults and monitor pump performance, with remote access ability if it was ever required.
