Bypass Critical Works – Victoria

Bypassing a critical sewer pump station for major upgrades!

Swan Street sewer pump station is the most crucial station in Wangaratta’s sewer network as it gathers and transports almost half of the town’s waste to the treatment facility. The station, which is over 70 years old, has recently undergone renovations to accommodate the town’s expanding population and shifting sewer requirements.

These variations have made it more difficult to maintain and run the station.

NPE were engaged to set up and oversee a complex bypass system.

There were many difficulties because the station had to be taken offline for the duration of the work. The pumps operate at a rate of 85 to 90 litres per second, and the station’s holding time during peak flows is a little over an hour. Numerous inflow pipes are at the station, with diameters ranging from 150mm to 450mm.

NPE provided a system with power supply, pumps, hose and telemetry for continuous flow control and monitoring. Several obstacles that arose during the project required on-site problem-solving or system modifications. Problems were solved thanks to the clever system design, operator expertise and contractor support.
