McConnell Dowell was awarded the contract for the Dryandra Road Works, a significant structural element of the New Parallel Runway by Brisbane Airport Corporation (BAC). The Dryandra Road Project is a reinforced concrete 4-lane underpass structure, supported on approximately 700 precast concrete piles including 1.5km of roadway, full underpass fit-out with portions of taxiway and airfield road mounted atop the underpass structure.

We were able to complete the entire dewatering project with zero environmental compliance issues. Given the high level of scrutiny around water quality and the high number of auditing and compliance checks this was a major achievement. The process ensured the installation of the dewatering and water treatment facility was completed on time and within the allowed contract milestone dates set and agreed to prior to works commencing on site.

NPE’s wellpoint design meant that a single line wellpoint system could be used on site to effectively dewater a large multilayered ground strata excavation without placing any hydrostatic load on the sheet pile shoring system. Historically in these difficult and complex types of ground conditions this could have only been achieved using multiple staged or stepped down system. In this case this would have proven unacceptable given the increased footprint required, additional time needed to install and the increase in construction costs.
